The Russian Department was established in 1949. In 1988, it resumed its enrollment after the resumption of the gaokao system, and began to set up an undergraduate program in 2003. In 2012, the department was authorized to confer the Master’s Degree in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. The department is dedicated to cultivating creative and practical talents to meet social needs, and aims to provide its students with a good command of the Russian language, and a broad range of knowledge with an international vision. For the past 20 years, the department has produced a great number of qualified professionals for Yanbian Prefecture. With the department’s increase in its exchange with Russia, Yanbian University has signed cooperation agreements with Far East Federal University, Siberian University of Law, Economics and Management,Far East State Technical Fishery University, the Artyom Branch of Far East State University of Economics and Service. Every year, some students will be sent to Russia for further studies. The department has adopted “2+2”and “3+1”talent training modes. According to the“2+2” mode, its students are able to obtain 2 diplomas and certificates of bachelor degree in both universities. Since 2013, students have been sent to Russian for their internships. The foreign exchange programs help to enlarge students’ horizons, develop their ability of intercultural communication with an international vision, and provide them with effective training and full preparations for their future careers. Till 2013, 211 students have graduated from the department. Now it has 180 students, and consists of 13 faculty members with 5 associate professors, 4 lecturers and 3 foreign teachers.
