Department of College Foreign Language Teaching and Research offers foreign language courses to undergraduates and postgraduates in Yanbian University. The department consists of 110 full-time teachers with 2 professors, 38 associate professors, and 59 lecturers. In 2004, the course of College English was awarded as an excellent course in Jilin Province. In the same year, YBU was chosen as one of the pilot universities in the national college English course reform by Ministry of Education. To improve YBU students’ foreign language proficiency, it offers the course of English Conversation in 2007, which changed to the class of Advanced English in 2011.
      The department attaches great importance to training the students’ autonomous learning ability and to use the language in daily life. The department organizes a series of language activities every academic year, including the English debate contest, the English speech contest, the foreign language songs singing contest and the English corner. These activities not only enrich YBU students’ campus life, but also create their self-confidence in learning foreign languages. Up to now, more than 400 students have won awards in provincial or national foreign language contests. The department also endeavors to improve its faculty’s teaching by encouraging them to attend provincial-level foreign language teaching contests, sponsoring the visiting scholar program and inviting famous scholars to give lectures. Since 2007, more teachers have been sent to the UK, the USA and Australia for short-term training or advanced studies.
