Since its establishment in 1983, English Department of CFL, YBU, with complete educational levels, a strong teaching force and dazzling academic achievements, has become a distinct specialty in Jilin Province’s institutions of higher learning during the 12th Five-Year Plan period.
The department has 3 specialties, that is, English Language and Literature, English Education and English for Multilingual Students, with 1 second-level-discipline Doctor Degree program (English Language and Literature), 2 second-level-discipline Master Degree programs (English Language and Literature, and Linguistics and Applied Linguistics), and 1 professional degree program for Master of Disciplinary Education (the English language). At present it has 305 undergraduates, 70 postgraduates and 7 international students. The department has 27 full-time teachers, among whom 5 are professors and 8 associate professors. 12 of them hold a Doctor’s Degree, 3 are doctoral candidates, and 25 have received overseas education or training. Several excellent teachers have been awarded prizes, including 1 advanced teacher in Jilin province’s educational circles, 1 exemplary teacher in Jilin Province, 1 outstanding teacher by BaoSteel Educational Foundation and 1 May 1 Labor Modal winner in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture. The department has offered 1 provincial-level top-quality course, 1 provincial-level excellent course, and 3 excellent courses in Yanbian University. It has set up 1 provincial-level teaching group with 3 provincial-level teaching achievement awards.
The English Department, by exploiting its bilingual advantages, will endeavor to broaden its disciplinary area and offer a variety of specialized courses in order to cultivate more multilingual professionals for the local economic development.
