At the invitation of English Department of CFL, Professor Kwon Oryang from English Education Department of the Teachers College, Seoul National University, a supervisor of PhD candidates, gave a special lecture on “New Horizons of English Education Research” at the West Building on July 17, 2015. Then Mr. Kwon had a discussion with English majors on how to explore new horizons of English education research by reviewing the evolution of English education and methods of English education research. He pointed out that the aim of learning English is to learn to use English itself rather than language rules. English teaching and learning should focus on the cultivation of language skills rather than the command of language knowledge. Meanwhile, he introduced the current situation and features of English education in the ROK, and held that the healthy development of English education requires the joint effort by the government, society and the school. Professor Kwon Oryang graduated from English Education Department of Seoul National University in 1972; he received his master degree at Brigham Young University, USA in 1981 and a PhD degree in TESL at Texas University in 1986. He was president of the English Education Society of South Korea from 1995 to 1996, president of the English Teachers’ Association of South Korea from 2002 to 2004, and president of the English Language Testing Society of South Korea from 2000 to 2011. He also served as an editorial board member of Language Testing by International Language Evaluation Society from 2007 and chairman of English Test Paper Setting Board for the Korean College Entrance Examination in 2012. He was awarded the Green Diligent Medal by the ROK President in 2014. His research mainly covers English education and second language acquisition.
