At the invitation of CFL, Professor Francois Victor Tochon, head of Department of Curriculum and Instruction and a supervisor of Ph.D candidates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, gave a special lecture on "Deep Education and Deep University" at our school’s Academic Lecture Hall of the Comprehensive Building on the afternoon of March 19, 2015. In his lecture he outlined the definition, evolution, domain of study and current progress of Deep Education, and interpreted the feasibility of setting up the Deep University to meet market demand by adopting and developing such educational policy. He also distinguished between deep teachers and shallow teachers, and stressed that only deep teachers can help to cultivate students’ habit of deep learning. Professor Tochon also had a discussion on the theme “From Language Education to Deep Teacher Education” with our foreign language teachers on the afternoon of March 20. During the discussion, he laid stress on Deep Education, and advocated teaching and learning language through deep transformation. He pointed out that Deep Education--a flexible and changeable concept adapting to students’ needs--can help teachers to complete their building of curricula and take into consideration the learners’ acquisition and the linguistic environment in the process. His lecture is very helpful to our students’ learning autonomy. Professor Tochon, council chairperson of the MOOCS’ Deep University program sponsored by the Lions International Foundation, is proficient in five languages, including English, French, German, Spanish and Turkish, and holds four doctoral degrees. His domain of study covers language education policy, world language education and educational semiotics. He has published 39 books, 227 theses and 28 research reports, and given more than 340 lectures worldwide.
